Caring for Troop Tents

Our Troop tents are a significant investment, with each tent costing more than $600. As Scouts, we strive to be Trustworthy, Courteous, Thrifty, and Clean. One way we live those values is by properly caring for our equipment so it lasts for many years and serves future Scouts.

Taking Tents Home

At the end of each campout, Scouts may be asked to take a tent home to dry and clean before returning it to the trailer. Please follow these guidelines:

  • Keep all tent components together. Each tent, tent bag, tent poles, and pole bag are marked with matching colored tape. If anything is missing, write it on the whiteboard in the back of the trailer and notify the Quartermaster or a Scout leader.
  • Each tent bag should contain:
    • Ground tarp
    • Hand broom
    • Dustpan
If any of these items are missing, note it on the whiteboard.
  • Tent stakes are stored in the stake bucket in the back of the trailer. Make sure to grab 6 stakes (4 for corners and 2 for porch) and take them home with you!
  • Guy ropes for the awning may be in the tent bag or in a bucket in the back of the trailer.

Drying the Tent

  • Set up the tent as soon as possible after returning home and allow it to dry completely.
  • If the weather is sunny, pitch the tent outside in direct sunlight.
  • If it is raining, spread the tent out in a garage or other covered area. Unzip all windows and doors, and if possible, place two camp chairs inside the tent to improve air circulation between the canvas and vinyl floor.
  • Unfurl the awning so it can dry completely, and leave it unfurled when storing the tent.

Cleaning the Tent

  • The tent should have been swept out before being packed away, but sweep it again if needed.
  • Brush off dirt and debris from the canvas.
  • If additional cleaning is needed, rinse with water and wipe with a soft cloth. Do not use soaps or detergents, as they can damage the canvas’s water-repellent treatment.
  • Dry the ground tarp and brush off any debris. If necessary, clean it with water and a brush.

Caring for Zippers

  • Avoid forcing or “grinding” zippers around corners.
  • If necessary, gently pull the canvas, window, or door fabric to help the zipper move smoothly.
  • Keep zippers free of dirt and debris.
  • Before taking down the tent, leave the windows partially unzipped to allow air to escape while rolling the tent.

Reporting Any Damage

If you notice any of the following, please write it on the whiteboard in the back of the trailer and notify the Quartermaster or a Scout leader as soon as possible:

  • Holes or tears
  • Damaged or sticking zippers
  • Signs of mold or mildew
  • Missing equipment

Prompt reporting helps us repair problems before they become worse.

Returning the Tent

When you return the tent to the trailer, make sure to including the following items:

  • Tent bag with the following:
    • Tent
    • Ground Tarp
    • Guy lines (ropes for staking down the porch)
    • Hand broom and dust pan
  • Pole bag with all poles
  • Put stakes back in stake bucket
  • Write “Returned” and the date in the Issue section of the whiteboard for that specific tent.
  • Do not erase the name of the Scout who took the tent home. This helps us keep track of where each tent has been.

Thank you for helping take care of our Troop equipment! Your efforts save the Troop money, extend the life of our tents, and ensure they are ready for the next adventure.
